Mayan calendar (Photo credit: RichardBowen)

Yes, dear readers, the Mayan calendar seems to suggest that either we're all doomed sometime in the next few weeks as the world is set to end in December 2012... or the Mayans just planned to turn back to the first page of their calendar and start counting again for another few thousand years. Either, or.

But the point is not whether or not the Mayans predicted the world is ending. No, my friends, the really important point is that it gives us all just enough time to watch the top five best end of the world disaster movies of all time!

Note: I avoided alien invasion flicks and zombie movies for this list. Instead, these are virtually all naturally occurring world-ending scenarios, with the only exception being a single nuclear war movie that is simply too good to leave off the list. And this way, there's a little bit of everything included. I was going to make it a top ten list, but there's apparently not all that much time left to watch all of these movies AND get your shopping done before the sales/world ends, (besides, you'll also need to watch some movies from my upcoming new Christmas movies list), so I had to compromise a bit.

And now, let the countdown begin!

5. Knowing -- An oft-maligned film that's far better than the naysayers admit or realize, this is a movie that posits a series of smaller isolated disasters in the lead up to the grand finale. The effects are constantly great, including the best airplane crash sequence I've ever seen in a movie, presented as a single long scenes without breaks (although I believe it was just cleverly edited to appear to be one extended shot), and it works marvelously.

The film has one of Nicolas Cage's best recent performances, too (after the plane crash scene, he comes home in a state of shock after witnessing the carnage, and the revelation of the moment's relevance to his tragic past becomes apparent with a simple painful look from Cage that is full of emotional weight).

4. Deep Impact -- This is the definitive asteroid movie, from the realistic portrayal of the official announcement of news about the impending disaster to the preparations made partially in secret to try and help humanity survive, to the final climactic moments when doom strikes.

With one of the best casts of modern disaster films, it focuses on the characters and emotional turmoil that comes from knowing the precise moment the world is going to end and you will lose everything and everyone you care about.

3. Melancholia -- One of 2011's best films, a gorgeous depiction of Earth's last days before a rogue planet collides with our own. It's not rooted in any attempt at scientific realism, it is merely concerned with our hearts and how we face the inevitability of our end.

It's easily the most purely artistic and almost experimental of films in the disaster genre, with art direction and cinematography that I could stare at endlessly. You can't be sure what's going to really happen at the end, but when the moment arrives it is breathtaking in emotion and visual realization.

Now, turn the page to see the top two best end of the world disaster films ever made!

2. The Day After -- The one non-natural disaster film on my list, but I couldn't possible exclude what remains to this day as the penultimate end of the world portrayal. Originally aired as a mini-series on ABC, it mesmerized and horrified millions of viewers with its brutal message about the scope of destruction awaiting us in the event of a global nuclear war.

Almost 30 years later, its impact is undiminished and the shots of citizens freezing in fear or running in panic as they witness missiles rising up from silos into the sky will send chills down your spine. This was the first time most viewers heard of nuclear winter, too, and the film's genius is that it doesn't just show us the events leading to the war and then the destruction of civilization, it trains its eye on the nightmarish aftermath awaiting survivors.

1. 2012 -- Yes, of course, the greatest end of the world disaster film to watch as you wait the Mayan calendar countdown is the one shamelessly exploiting the predictive fears about the Mayan 2012 non-prediction 'prediction.' Say whatever you want about cheesiness or typical disaster movie cliches, it won't matter. If you're going to destroy the world, then get down to it and do it right, which is exactly what this film does. You won't find more realistic depictions of Earth shaking and flooding and exploding and just all around falling apart -- the effects are breathtaking, regardless of how over the top the situations are.

The acting is better than it needs to be for a film like this, and the performers seem to be having a lot of fun with it. It's like a mix of disaster flick and action chase movie, because you've just never seen characters outrun, outdrive, outfly, and all-around out-live disasters like they do here. Put away your cynicism, sit back, and enjoy the silly but awesome ride, because if you're looking for movies that end the world anyway, you may as well accept what you're really in the market for in the first place, right?

There you have it, dear readers, your viewing list for the final days left before the world comes crashing down/an old calendar starts over again! But if you've got a few suggestions of your own to suggest, just sound off in the comments below!
