In computing, a serial port is a serial communication interface through which information transfers in or out one bit at a time (in contrast to a parallel port). Throughout most of the history of personal computers, data was transferred through serial ports to devices such as modems, terminals, and various peripherals. ShowMeCables offers a wide variety of USB connectors. Both 2.0 and 3.0 USB is available with A, B, mini, and micro options. With thousands on hand, our USB connectors are ready to ship today.
Everything You Need to Know About Serial RS 232 Female-to-Female Cables and Connectors
RS-232 serial cords were commonly used with computer peripherals in the 1990s and early 2000s. These cords are also known as DB9 cords, and they can be used to operate peripherals that were designed for older computers. The right serial cord has the potential to transform an old, useless peripheral into an integral part of your computing setup.

How do you pick the right cable for your needs? To determine which type of connector is right for your needs, you'll need to examine both the peripheral and the computer to which you intend to connect it. Take a look at the male port on the peripheral, and match it to the type of female port you need. Then, examine the male port on the computer, and determine if you need a PS/2, a serial, or a USB connector. Once you've found the right cord, you can use it to try out retro printers with your friends or to connect to an old-fashioned modem.
What types of RS-232 cables are offered?A few different types of female-to-female cables and adapters are offered that might suit your needs, including:
Db9 Serial Port
- USB to the serial port: These converters are used to make older peripherals compatible with new computers.
- Serial port to serial port: These cables are used to connect devices that both have male RS-232 ports.
- DB25 to serial cable: DB25 ports have 25 pins whereas DB9 ports have nine pins. These cables are used to connect a device with a DB25 port to another device with a DB9 port.
- Serial cable to PS/2: PS/2 devices are used with DB9 devices. These cables are used to make PS/2 devices like keyboards and mice compatible with serial devices.
Db9 Serial Port Pinout
How do you use an RS-232 cable with a PC?These steps vary based on the peripheral in question, but the following general directions apply when using any serial cable:
- Step 1: Connect the serial connector to the peripheral. To do this, line up the nine holes on the cord to the nine pins on the peripheral.
- Step 2: Secure the port by inserting and turning the two pins on either side of the port.
- Step 3: Connect the cable to the computer. If the port on the computer is serial or DB25, repeat steps one and two. If the port on the computer is USB or PS/2, insert the cable into the port.
- Step 4: Boot up the computer, and install any necessary peripheral software.
Start by going to the Device Manager. Once there do the following:
Expand the Ports ‘(COM& LPT)’
You should be looking at something like this:
As you can see Windows has set the port to COM10. However many legacy applications expect the port to be between 1-4. Let’s change that:
Right click on the device and click on ‘Properties’.
Click on ‘Port Settings’. Then click on ‘Advanced…’.
Once you’re in ‘Advanced Settings for COM10’ on the bottom you can see the ‘COM Port Number: COM10’. Click on that to change it to the lowest possible number (between 1-4).
Then click ‘OK’ on all open Property Windows.
Now the device should look like this:
