Kana Kaanum Kaalangal (Tamil: கனா காணும் காலங்கள்) was a 2006-2008 Tamildramasoap opera on weekdays on STAR Vijay. It is first Serial in Indian and Tamil Television to focus solely on adolescence and school life and became a trend setter and topped the TRP for Tamil serials. A sequel to the serial called Kana Kaanum Kaalangal Kallooriyin Kadhai has been made.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Later another sequel to the serial called Kana Kaanum Kalangal Kalloori Saalai was made, Both the sequels were focussed on college life. STAR Vijay conducted a talent search and students between 14 and 22 years were shortlisted and selected for the serial except Hemalatha and Ligeswaran who had prior acting experience all others were students who were acting for the first time with an emphasis to make as natural as possible with real life emphasis with actors using there natural language, slangs and make it very close to real school life.[9][10] It is also being re-aired on STAR Vijay Super since 16 January 2017, Monday through Friday at 8:00PM (IST).

This is a story about school life which was aired between Mondays to Thursdays at 8 PM on Star Vijay channel. This series gave the audience a different feeling about serials, avoiding the conventional scenes and emotions, and hence created a massive fan group. Being set in the school days, this series is all about 12 students, separated into 2 groups. The plot revolves around the rivalry between these 2 groups and the consequences of the same. Everyday happenings of the student life are portrayed beautifully in this series to very minute detail like healthy competition, fights, jealousy and friendship with casual and lively dialogues and gripping screenplay with Prabhu Kanna's direction.
The title music track had become a household anthem, composed by the renowned music director Vijay Antony. It was also the mobile ringtone of many young fans in Tamil Nadu. This show was produced by time frames and is the only show that had proven a hit with new faces as its cast. The audiences were made to feel that watching this serial was like watching a blockbuster film on television. Launched in October, 2006 the series completed its 100th episode in June, 2007 which was marked by a special episode whence the kids traveled back in time to the days of Gurukul.
As a part of the 100th episode celebrations; a LIVE chat with the KKK team was organized on indya.com in which the diehard fans of the show got a chance to interact with them. The carnival organized in June 2007 was a huge success which was witnessed by more than thousands of eager fans flocking to the grounds so as to catch a glimpse of their stars. The fans had the names of their favorite character painted on their faces and their joy knew no bounds when they met their KKK stars.

Kana Kanum Kalangal was telecasted in Star Vijay. The serial was produced by Raghavesh Asthana and R. Rajesgwari, and directed by Prabhu Kanna. The main characters included Vineeth, Raghavi, Bala, Pandi, Sanghavi, Rishi, Krishna, Pachaiyappan, Joseph, Unni menon, Deepa, Ragini and many others. The title song composed by Vijay Antony, starting with “Kanavugal Kanum vayasaachchu……” was an instant hit and it was a popular ring tone in many mobiles. The school life with usual jealousy, competitions, fights and arguments was shown in a beautiful way by the director, with an excellent screenplay and gripping dialogues.
The serial made the adults recollect and revisit their old memories of their schooldays and made them understand their kids better. Many characters in the serial made the viewers, connect with them in their real life. The serial was considered a blockbuster, when it was aired in Star Vijay. The success was celebrated in the 100th episode, by making the audience chat with the cast of the serial. The venue of the event was very crowded, as many were eager to meet their favorite stars.
The serial was shot so naturally, that it made the fans long for school life again. Following the success of season 1 of the series, season 2 was started with fresh new faces and were promoted to 12th standard. When the producer and director announced the interview for the selection of the cast for second season, it was said that nearly 2000 applicants applied and they had a very tough time in short listing the participants in the selection. Thus was the impact and success of the serial. This serial was a trend setter in the history or Tamil television serials.
